Money Saving Tips

Save on Gas

1. Car Pool
2. Use Public transportation
3. Keep vehicle maintained, change oil, check tire pressure, replace air filters
4. Combine errands
5. Share a ride with neighbor or friend for shopping trips
6. Try to avoid drive thru’s (turn engine off while waiting)
7. Use Walmart Gift Cards, if you pay for gas (at Walmart pumps) you save 3 cents per gallon
8. Pumping gas in the early morning is a myth
9. Don’t carry extra things in your trunk. The heavier the load, the more gas it uses.
10. Slow down (Each 5 mph over 60 is like paying 15 cents more per gallon.)
11. "Gas Saving" products usually don’t work (save your money)
12. Don’t "top off", it will spill out if gas cap is not well sealed.


Save on Groceries

1. Make a list and stick to it
2. Coupons
3. Buy on Sale
4. Stock up when on sale (share w/ neighbor)
5. Check sales flyers, Walmart will price match
6. Don’t buy more perishables than you need (you're not saving if you have to throw it away)
7. Don’t shop on an empty stomach
8. Buy in Bulk (share/split cost w/ friend or neighbor) Shop at Wholesale clubs: Sam’s Costco’s, BJ’s
9. If possible start your own garden
10. Always check receipts for mistakes


Save on Household Expenses

1. Change to florescent light bulbs
2. Unplug appliances when not in use (even if it is turned off, electricity is still flowing to it)
3. Clean or replace filter in ac unit
4. Clear outside debris from unit (leaves, grass, weeds can restrict air flow)
3. Seal off any cracks or openings near windows and doors (especially window around units)
4. Tint Windows, use Room Darkening Curtain or Shades
5. Close off rooms that you don’t use
6. Use ceiling fans or personal fans
7. Don’t let water run unnecessarily (brushing teeth, doing dishes)
8. Wait for a full load of laundry
9. If possible hang clothes out to dry
10. Get rid of call waiting, call forwarding, long distance service (use calling card) or if you can do without it, do away with land-line
11. Cancel HBO, Showtime
12. Cancel Gym Membership (exercise at home)
13. Cancel Newspaper (read on line) or share subcription with neighbor
14. If possible, brown bag your lunch
15. Drink coffee at home (it's cheaper than coffe shops and convenient stores)
16. Shop at yard sales, thrift stores, good will
17. Buy Seasonal items off season (Christmas items after Christmas, Summer clothes after summer)
18. Pay bills on line (save on stamps)
19. Deposit your money checking account (only keep what you need on hand)
20. Always keep track of your money


Save on Entertainment

1. Use restaurant coupons
2. Go to a restaurant that has buffet
3. Go to a Matinee
4. Check out movies and cds from the Library for free
5. Check newspaper or on line for free entertainment (festivals)
6. Play board games


Earn Extra money

1. On line Surveys
2. Point programs
3. Click thru’s
